Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

  • Mechanical compression and irritation of the soft tissues in the suprahumeral space
  • Classified as :-
    • Primary: Result of an abnormal mechanical relationship between the rotator cuff and the coracoacromial arch during elevation of humerus
    • Secondary: “Relative Narrowing” of the subacromial space (poor posture, rotator cuff muscle weakness, instability,etc)
  • Stages :-shoulder impingement 3
    • Stage 1: Edema and Inflammation
    • Stage 2: Fibrosis and Tendinitis
    • Stage 3: Bone Spurs and Tendon Ruptures
  • Symptom :-
    • Pain with overhead reaching
    • Feel shoulder weakness
    • Only certain angle can feel the pain (painful arch)
    • Unable to sleep on affected side
